Scar Camouflage Certification

Awarded within the Certificate of Advanced Professional Training in Paramedical Tattooing

The Academy’s standard for scar camouflage: what competence means, what is assessed, and what the certificate documents. Earned within the Paramedical Tattoo Certification, not sold as a separate course.

Scar camouflage training at Dr. Rusnak Academy
I. About the Certification A named competency, not a separate course.

Scar camouflage is a paramedical tattooing technique that deposits custom-blended pigment into healed scar tissue so it more closely matches the surrounding skin. It does not remove or treat the scar. It reduces the visual contrast, and individual results vary with scar type, age, and skin tone. Because scar tissue accepts pigment differently from healthy skin, the work calls for a distinct skill set: scar assessment, color theory on fibrotic tissue, and conservative, staged application.

Dr. Rusnak Academy certifies scar camouflage as a named competency within the Paramedical Tattoo Certification, the foundation credential. There is no separate scar camouflage course to buy. Candidates enroll in the three-day certification delivered by Healing Skin Medical Aesthetics, and the certificate they receive, the Certificate of Advanced Professional Training in Paramedical Tattooing, documents scar camouflage among the competencies assessed.

The training is taught by Dr. Cecilia Rusnak PhD, LME, DAc, founder of the Academy and a Licensed Medical Esthetician with 32 years of clinical and aesthetic experience. Assessment is on live models under direct supervision. The Academy’s position is that scar camouflage is clinical work: case selection first, technique second, and documented competency before the certificate.

This page sets out the standard. The technique itself is described in the Academy’s scar camouflage technique brief; the full foundation curriculum is on the certification page.

II. The Standard

What the certification assesses.

01

Scar Assessment & Candidacy

Scar maturity, stability of pigmentation, texture and tissue quality, Fitzpatrick type and undertone. The candidate must show they can tell a scar that is ready for pigment from one that is not, and record why.

02

Color Theory on Scar Tissue

Matching, mixing, and diluting pigment to living skin across the full Fitzpatrick range; how healed scar tissue shifts color over time; undertone work in deeper skin tones as a core skill rather than an elective.

03

Pigment Placement & Depth on Fibrotic Tissue

Machine setup, needle selection, depth, and hand speed for compromised tissue. Conservative saturation, and the judgment to stop when tissue is not holding pigment.

04

Scar Categories

Surgical scars, traumatic scars, healed burn tissue, self-harm scars, and stretch marks: how each differs in tissue, in candidacy, and in the consultation it requires, including the screening and consent protocol for self-harm cases.

05

Staged Sessions & Aftercare

Multi-session treatment planning, healed-result review, touch-up protocol, aftercare instruction, and what to do when healing deviates from the expected course.

06

Documentation & Consent

The consultation record, informed consent, photographic documentation, and expectation-setting language. The candidate produces a written treatment plan that states what the work can and cannot do.

07

When Not to Tattoo

Immature or unstable scars, keloid-prone skin, active skin conditions, unrealistic expectations, and cases that belong with a physician. Declining or deferring a case is assessed as a competency in its own right.

08

The Inkless Companion Technique

The ISR Inkless method for hypopigmented and textured scars where pigment is the wrong tool: when to use inkless first, when to combine the two, and when to use neither. Part of the foundation curriculum. See the Academy’s inkless tattooing primer.

IV. Questions

Common questions about scar camouflage certification.

Is scar camouflage certification a separate course?

No. Dr. Rusnak Academy does not sell scar camouflage as a stand-alone class. It is a named competency assessed within the Paramedical Tattoo Certification, the three-day foundation credential delivered by Healing Skin Medical Aesthetics. Enrolling in that certification is how a practitioner earns it.

What does the certificate actually document?

Candidates who complete the training and assessment receive the Certificate of Advanced Professional Training in Paramedical Tattooing, awarded by Dr. Rusnak Academy. Scar camouflage is one of the competencies the certificate documents, alongside stretchmark restoration, the inkless technique, pigment chemistry, and the regulatory framework.

Who is eligible for scar camouflage training?

No prior tattoo experience is required. Candidates include nurses, estheticians, permanent makeup artists, tattoo artists, and medical spa staff. Candidates must be 18 or older and must meet the licensing and registration requirements of the state where they intend to practice; the Academy reviews these with each candidate at enrollment.

Can a medical professional or medical spa add scar camouflage?

Yes. Medical professionals and medical spas train through the same Paramedical Tattoo Certification; the assessment standard does not change with the candidate's background. The curriculum includes the regulatory framework for medical-adjacent practice, and the Academy's Mastering Paramedical Billing credential covers the practice and compliance side separately.

How long does the training take?

Three days: one online theory day followed by two in-person days with live models under direct supervision. Candidates study the manual and are quizzed before class. Lifetime mentorship continues after the certificate is awarded, including healed-result review on early cases.

Where is scar camouflage training held?

Orlando, Florida is the home base. The certification also tours to New York, Houston, and Las Vegas. Every class is capped at 10 candidates. Current dates are listed on the Healing Skin training page.

Is there an online scar camouflage certification?

The theory day is online. The assessed hands-on work on scar tissue is in person and cannot be completed remotely, so there is no fully online path to this certification.

Does scar camouflage work on every scar?

No. Scar camouflage reduces the visual contrast between a healed, stable scar and the surrounding skin; it does not remove or treat the scar, and individual results vary with scar type, age, and skin tone. Immature scars, unstable pigmentation, and keloid-prone skin are screened out at consultation. Knowing when not to tattoo is assessed as a competency.

What does scar camouflage certification cost?

Tuition, deposit, and financing for the Paramedical Tattoo Certification are listed on the Healing Skin training page. The Academy does not publish a separate price for scar camouflage because it is not sold separately.

More on the Academy, its credentials, and enrollment on the FAQ page. All four credential tracks are listed on the Programs page; practitioners who hold the foundation credential progress to the 3D Areola Masterclass.

Academy credentials are professional certifications, not state licences. Florida requires a state-issued Tattoo Artist Licence to perform tattooing; requirements vary by state and county. Students are responsible for obtaining their own licensure.
